Donald Trump has hinted at the possibility of a "great" trade deal with India, sparking interest and speculation about what that could mean for both countries.

In New Delhi, US President Donald Trump dropped hints on Thursday about a "very big" trade deal with India. This comes just weeks after negotiators from both nations wrapped up four days of closed-door discussions on the agreement. Speaking at the 'Big Beautiful Event' at the White House, Trump expressed confidence in a "great deal" with India.

"Everyone's eager to strike a deal and be part of it. Remember a few months back when the media was asking, 'Do you really have anyone interested?' Well, we just inked a deal with China yesterday. We're making some fantastic agreements, and there's one on the horizon with India—it's going to be huge," he remarked. Trump also made it clear that the US won't be making trade deals with every country out there. "We're not going to cut deals with everyone. Some countries will just get a letter from us saying thanks, but you’ll be paying 25, 35, or even 45 percent. That’s the straightforward approach, and my team prefers not to go that route. They want to negotiate some, but they’re looking to make more deals than I would," he added. The recent four-day discussions on this major trade deal reportedly centered around increasing market access for both industrial and agricultural products, tariff reductions, and addressing non-tariff barriers, according to sources familiar with the negotiations. The US delegation was led by officials from the Office of the US Trade Representative, while the Indian team, headed by Rajesh Agrawal from the trade ministry, was also present. The goal of these negotiations is to boost the annual bilateral trade between the two nations from the current $190 billion to an impressive $500 billion by 2030. As the talks wrapped up on June 10, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated that India and the US are working towards a fair and equitable trade agreement that will benefit both economies. "PM Modi and US President Trump met in February 2025... Both leaders have agreed to pursue a bilateral trade agreement that will be mutually advantageous for our economies, businesses, and citizens of both countries.
